A conceptual framework is a research tool used to guide courses of action within a research project. The "framework" consists of a set of concepts that have been conceived from already existing ideas, methodologies, behaviours, functions, objects or technologies.

It combines the research methods of quantitative and qualitative data collection and techniques used in empirical research, with scope to also research by exploration.
